Ingredients Needed
These Chocolate Sugar Cookies are the perfect dessert for any occasion. They look amazing on a dessert table and are simple enough for a quick and easy weeknight dessert. As always, you can find the full printable recipe with complete instructions in the recipe card at the end of this post. Let’s take a look at what you’ll need…
- granulated sugar – The cookie dough balls are rolled into sugar prior to baking for a pretty and sweet finish.
- all-purpose flour – The base of the cookies, provides structure.
- unsweetened cocoa powder – Not hot cocoa mix. This gives the cookies their rich chocolate flavor.
- baking soda and baking powder – The leavening ingredients in this cookie recipe.
- salt – Provides balance and enhances the flavors in this recipe.
- unsalted butter – You’ll need two sticks of butter. If you need to substitute salted butter, omit the salt from the recipe.
- brown sugar – Gives these cookies a wonderful subtle note of molasses and provides the sweetness in these cookies.
- vanilla extract – Adds warmth and flavor to the chocolate sugar cookie recipe.
- eggs – Adds richness and structure to the cookies.
How To Make Chocolate Sugar Cookies
- Pour granulated sugar into a small bowl and set aside.
- Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
- Combine brown sugar and melted butter in the bowl of a stand mixer or large bowl. Beat until combined and creamy. Add eggs, one at a time and continue to blend. Add vanilla extract and beat until combined.
- Slowly add dry ingredients and stir just until all ingredients are incorporated.
- Scoop dough into balls, then roll into the small bowl of granulated sugar.
- Press down the tops of the cookies a bit (with your hands, or the bottom of a glass). Sprinkle with additional sugar if desired.
- Bake cookies on parchment paper lined (or Silpat lined) baking sheets (one baking sheet at a time) in a pre-heated 350°F oven for 12 to 14 minutes until cookies have puffed up and tops are cracked.
- Remove cookies from oven, and allow to cool on baking sheet a few minutes before moving to a cooling rack. Enjoy!
Storage Information
Leftover cookies should be stored in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days. Allow the cookies to cool completely before storing.
To freeze, let cool, transfer to a freezer-safe, airtight container, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature.
Trish’s Tips and Tricks
- Let the butter cool after melting. If combined with the sugar when hot, it will create a greasy cookie.
- Do not over mix or over bake. That will create a tough cookie instead of a soft and chewy cookie.
- For flatter cookies, press down gently on the cookie dough balls before baking.
- Add mini chocolate chips to the batter for even more chocolate flavor.
