How to Make Chocolate Bark
There are only four main steps to making Halloween chocolate bark! Keep in mind, the whole recipe in the complete printable recipe card below.
Prepare Work
- Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with a silicone liner or parchment paper and set it aside for later.
- Chop – or break apart – any larger candies, cookies, or pretzels.
Melt Chocolate
- Melt the vanilla candy bark – or white chocolate – as directed on the package. If you’re heating it in the microwave, use 50% power to prevent any overheating.
- Pour about half of the melted chocolate onto the lined baking sheet and then spread it so it’s about ¼ inch thick.
Add Candy
- Working quickly so the chocolate doesn’t harden, add an assortment of pretzels, cookie chunks, and candy corn in a single layer.
- Pour the remaining melted chocolate on top of your prepared chunks and then add any additional toppings, including sprinkles.
- Set the pan aside and allow the chocolate to cool fully.
Break Bark
- Once the chocolate is fully cool and set, break the bark apart into pieces.
- Enjoy immediately or store at room temperature in an airtight container.
Storage Information
This candy bark is a great make-ahead treat! Make sure you store it properly so you can enjoy it at its best.
- Room Temperature: Place the bark in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
- Refrigerator: Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 weeks.
- Freezer: You can wrap large chunks of the bark in plastic wrap and then put the wrapped pieces into a freezer bag and store them for up to 3 months in the freezer.
- Thawing: Allow the frozen pieces to defrost in the refrigerator and then sit on the counter to come to room temperature.
You can use any white chocolate or white chocolate bark for this recipe. Ghirardelli Vanilla Melting Wafers is my favorite and I believe has the best flavor.
Variations To Try
The variations on this recipe are endless! Enjoy these ideas for different flavors, seasonal themes, and yummy candy mix-ins.
- If you want to make your Halloween candy bark more festive, add a bit of orange food coloring to your white chocolate or vanilla melts! You can swirl it in or make the base of the bark all orange.
- Add nuts or seeds for some crunch! (Please keep food allergies in mind if you’ll be handing it out.)
- I use white chocolate or candy melts, but you can also use dark or milk chocolate.
- Add dried fruit to your bark – dried or candied citrus is especially yummy.
- Christmas time means peppermint bark is on everyone’s mind! Add crushed candy canes and/or add a few drops of peppermint extract to the melted chocolate.
- Crunch up your favorite cookie and add it to your bark.
- Add your favorite cereal – Lucky Charms would be great!
- Speaking of Lucky Charms, mini marshmallows would be great in candy bark!
Trish’s Tips
- Short on time? You can speed up the process by placing the sheet in the freezer for 10 minutes.
- Thaw from frozen slowly! If you freeze your bark, make sure you thaw it in stages. If you take the bark straight from the freezer to room temperature it’ll create too much condensation and the chocolate will get melty.
- Be careful melting your chocolate. The microwave is the easiest way to melt it, but make sure you do it slowly so it doesn’t burn. Just a few seconds make the difference between perfectly melted and burnt chocolate.
